Helen Thomas and CAIR – a Logical Twosome

    H-Thomas2.bmp

The American Thinker: Helen Thomas who had a long history of anti-Israeli, anti-Jewish rants as a White House correspondent, gets an award from CAIR [Council on American Islamic Relations]. Thomas, then 89, resigned from Hearst newspapers in June in the wake of video recorded comments she made urging Israeli Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine” … [and] “go back home to Poland, Germany, America and everywhere else.” Thomas will receive a lifetime achievement award from CAIR on October 9, 2010.

CAIR has been listed by the Justice Department as an unindicted co-conspirator in a U.S. government terrorism funding trial. CAIR’s co-founders had ties to an international religious extremist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood. For more on CAIR’s Islamist orientation and activities, including attempted intimidation of critics and Muslim moderates, see CAMERA’s Special Report CAIR: Civil Rights or Extremism?

This award makes perfect sense since Helen Thomas’ anti-Israel maunderings and CAIR’s agenda go hand-in-hand.

Palestinians Continue to Flout Obama’s Demand to Stop Inciting

    Abbas1.bmp

    PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas

President Obama demanded on July 6, 2010 that the Palestinian Authority cease inciting the populace against Israel and Jews:

I think it’s very important that the Palestinians not look for excuses for incitement; that they are not engaging in provocative language; that at the international level, they are maintaining a constructive talk, as opposed to looking for opportunities to embarrass Israel. (From the President’s July 6, 2010 press conference held jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu).

But Palestinian incitement continues unabated, with Palestinian Authority media, mosques and government officials all getting in on the act to preach hatred against Israel and Jews. For example:

Palestinian Authority newspaper, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, announces that a summer camp for young leaders has been named after terrorist Dalal Mughrabi who led a 1978 bus hijacking in which 37 Israeli civilians, 12 of them children, were killed. The newspaper reports that the camp “aims at training young leaders” in the Bethlehem area. The camp’s name is “Shahida (Martyr) Dalal Mughrabi summer camp” (reported by Palestinian Media Watch).

    • On Al Manar TV, PA cabinet minister Muhammad Ishtayeh, minister for public works and housing, praises mastermind of Munich Olympics terror Attack and promises violence against Israel (reported by Middle East Media Research Institute).

    • Child on PA TV: “[W]e will be combatants … against the Israelis” (reported by Palestinian Media Watch).

    • PA TV children’s program, Chicks, shows a map that includes all of Israel but the entire area of Israel is labeled only as Palestine (reported by Palestinian Media Watch).

Why has this not been reported by the mainstream media?

Palestinians Ignore President Obama’s Demand to Stop Anti-Israel Incitement

    PMW.child.1.combat.intvw.JPG

Child on PA TV: “We will be combatants and wage resistance (violence) against the Israelis”

Palestinian Authority TV – controlled by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas – disregarded President Obama’s July 6, 2010 demand to stop inciting the Palestinian populace against Israel.

But will mainstream media entities pay any attention?

Below is an excerpt from President Obama’s July 6 press conference (held jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu):

I think it’s very important that the Palestinians not look for excuses for incitement; that they are not engaging in provocative language; that at the international level, they are maintaining a constructive talk, as opposed to looking for opportunities to embarrass Israel.

Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) provides video clip and translation of part of PA TV broadcast aired at least twice subsequent to July 6. Palestinian child is shown saying he was taught to be a future combatant against Israel:

I came here following the conference elections. I hope that there will be more conferences like the Sixth Fatah Conference [in August 2009]. These conferences are important for us because it makes us aware of leadership and that we will be combatants and wage resistance (violence) against the Israelis.

PMW’s Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook:

PMW reported on Fatah’s Sixth General Conference in August 2009 which was as a unique opportunity for Fatah under PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to join the peace process by renouncing Fatah principles and platforms that call for Israel’s destruction. As PMW has documented, the Fatah leaders rejected the world’s demands to recognize Israel, and continued to promote armed struggle as central to the movement’s aims. The Fatah charter still calls for Israel’s destruction, and can be viewed in Arabic on Fatah’s website. The English version of the Fatah charter that used to appear at Fatah’s website has been removed. [Note: An English translation of the Fatah charter is available at the CAMERA Web site. Chapter 1, Article 12 (Goals section) of the Fatah charter states the first goal: “Complete liberation of Palestine, and eradication of Zionist economic, political, military and cultural existence.”]

Major Media Mute About News of Hezbollah’s Human Shields in Lebanon

    cartoon.IDF.pc.jpg

    Menachem Jerenberg – jerenberg.blogspot.com

Thus far, major mainstream media entities that heavily cover Israel – such as the New York Times and Washington Post – have been mute about the news in July of Hezbollah’s extensive use of civilians as human shields. On July 8, 2010, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)
provided intelligence maps showing how Hezbollah (“party of Allah” in Arabic), the Islamic terrorist organization sponsored by Iran, uses Lebanese civilians as human shields in villages expropriated for Hezbollah military bases. This inhumane behavior is a gross violation of UN Resolution 1701, but the United Nations, like the mainstream media, seems uninterested in the matter.

Among the few newspapers covering the story are Israeli newspapers, here and here, an Irish newspaper and the Wall Street Journal in a July 20 opinion column. The Associated Press also provided the story.

Hezbollah strategizes that it will be able to take advantage of the situation, betting that its foe, Israel, as a nation adhering to Western values, will hesitate to attack military bases embedded among civilians for fear of inflicting civilian casualties. But in the likely event of a future war, Israel will have to choose between, on the one hand, protecting its own civilians, and on the other hand, severely limiting its response in order to spare Lebanese civilians.

Thus, Israel’s purpose for revealing this heretofore classified military information serves to warn the Lebanese civilians, placed in harm’s way by Hezbollah, whose lives would be at great risk in any subsequent hostilities initiated by Hezbollah. The information also offers context for any future media coverage in the event of conflict.

    Comedy Channeling C-SPAN

Open letter to Jon Stewart, host and executive producer of the Daily Show on Comedy Central (Monday through Thursday, 11:00 PM ET).

    Dear Mr. Stewart:

Your popular Daily Show often tackles current news items with clever, caustic humor. In this vein, a March 31, 2010 Daily Show broadcast segment humorously and appropriately lampooned a C-SPAN host‘s feckless handling of a casually racist anti-black caller in a March 29 C-SPAN Washington Journal broadcast. However, this host merely typifies all (or nearly all) of the C-SPAN Journal hosts in their handling of a particular class of bigoted rants by sitting mutely, shuffling papers, and then thanking the callers for their input. These rants, contained in hundreds of calls aired by C-SPAN, are readily available to be mined for humorous fulmination. The documentation is concisely presented on CAMERA’s Website, camera.org, in the following articles (several of the calls documented include video clips): C-SPAN Watch, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal a Platform for Anti-Semitism, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal Caller Problem, and – C-SPAN President’s CAMERA Shy Reaction (with video clip) in which a rare Israel related call not bashing Israel, is humorously mishandled by C-SPAN’s president, acting as Journal host, reacting tongue-tied and speechless to a caller’s news that the historical record shows that Arab anti-Jewish terrorism had preceded Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

These CAMERA articles describe hundreds of Journal calls containing virulent anti-Jewish, anti-Israel rants handled in a feckless or foolish way by the host and (often) the guest.

We trust that you will utilize the Journal broadcast material from CAMERA (or at least make use of the CAMERA material in searching C-SPAN archives) for use in the Daily Show since you aim (or should aim) to be an equal-opportunity satirist.

    Sincerely,

    CAMERA

Media Outlets Ignore Palestinian TV’s Incitement to Violence Against Israel

    Abbas1.bmp

    Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas

Media outlets largely ignore the incitement to violence against Israel perpetrated by official Palestinian Authority TV, which is controlled by Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Prominent newspapers, like the New York Times and Washington Post, which heavily cover Palestinian-Israeli matters, say nothing about PA TV’s incendiary broadcasts, the content of which clearly violates existing Israeli-PA agreements on ending incitement and is an impediment to peace.

Following CAMERA’s recent report on the media’s failure to cover PA TV’s anti-Israel, anti-Jewish incitement, the phenomenon continues apace. Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) provides a translation of a March 11, 2010 PA TV report praising the March 11, 1978 terror attack in which 37 Israelis were murdered in a bus hijacking. The sister of the terrorist leader was interviewed:

This is a day of glory and pride for our Palestinian people and a blow to the Zionists… we must unite, and our rifles must unite, against the enemy who steals our land.

A PA broadcast aimed at Israeli Arab children teaches them to deny the legitimacy of Israel and to imagine a world without Israel. The broadcast segment refers to the land of the State of Israel only as “occupied territories” or “1948 territories” or “occupied Palestine.” PMW provides a video clip and translation of the Friday, February 26, 2010 PA TV news report in which the host addresses Israeli Arab children:

Soon, if it works out, we will be among you in the 1948 territories [PA euphemism for Israel] – the occupied territories… Our friends from the 1948 territories – the occupied territories – they write wanting us to [broadcast] there with them. Many of them have come here, Bissu [name of co-host, in cat costume], trying to be friends [of the program] and they are truly dear friends and regular [viewers]… There are also [children] from Lod [Israeli city] and also Ahmad from Nazareth [Israeli city] and there are so many. There’s Adnan from Be’er Sheva [Israeli city]. Dear children: We will definitely always remain in contact with you, because you have the right, and this program is definitely yours too, just as it belongs to every Palestinian child, since you are part of occupied Palestine.

    PMW
provides a video clip and translation of a Thursday, February 11, 2010 PA TV news report of a Palestinian mother celebrating her son’s death in an Israeli air strike against combatants:

We had always hoped for his Martyrdom (Shahada), knowing he wanted to die as a Martyr (Shahid). Every time he went out, we would say to him, ‘May Allah be with you.’ We knew that he wanted to die as a Martyr. Praise to Allah, he sought Martyrdom, and he achieved it. My message to every mother is to sacrifice her child for Palestine. Second woman: By Allah, we welcome every Martyr as if he were a groom among us [evidently referring to an Islamic belief, promoted by the PA and Hamas, that Islamic martyrs will marry 72 virgins in paradise].

Palestinian TV Preaches Hatred of Jews

    Abbas1.bmp

Palestinian Chairman Abbas’ TV Preaches Hatred of Jews

While the major news media generally portray Palestinian Authority leadership as moderate (sharply contrasting it with that of Hamas), the PA continues to provide for the indoctrination of Palestinian Arabs – through its schools, mosques and media – to hate Jews and to deny the legitimacy of Israel.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provides a video clip and translation of the Friday, January 29, 2010 sermon delivered from the pulpit of Nablus’s Bourin Mosque and aired on PA official television which is under the control of Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the American-backed Palestinian Authority:

The Jews are the enemies of Allah and His messenger (Muhammad) and the enemies of humanity in general, and of the Palestinians in particular…. Jews will always be Jews. Even if donkeys cease to bray, dogs cease to bark, wolves cease to howl, and snakes cease to bite, the Jews will not cease to be hostile to the Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad said: `Whenever two Jews find themselves alone with a Muslim, they think of killing him.’ Oh Muslims, this land, these holy places, and these mosques will only be liberated when we return to the Book of Allah, and when all Muslims are prepared to become mujahideen for the sake of Allah, in support of Palestine, its people, its land, and its holy places. The Prophet Muhammad said: ‘You will fight the Jews, and you will kill them …’

Major news media – including the New York Times and Washington Post which heavily cover Palestinian-Israeli matters – published nothing about the sermon, the content of which clearly violated existing Israeli-PA agreements on ending incitement.

    Media’s “Hard-Line” on Israel’s Prime Minister

    Bibi1.jpgabbas1.jpg

    Characterized as “hard-line” …..Not characterized as “hard-line”

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has called for immediate negotiations without preconditions and expressed acceptance of a Palestinian state that would not threaten Israel’s security, is nevertheless often pejoratively called “hard-line” (as is the government coalition he leads) by the mainstream American media, especially the Associated Press. Conversely, the term “hard-line” or “intransigent,” is rarely, if ever, applied to the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, who repeatedly refuses to enter peace talks with Israel despite compromises offered by Mr. Netanyahu.

For example, a January 21 Associated Press report, by Mohammed Daraghmeh, said: “The hard-line prime minister who leads a coalition largely opposed to territorial compromise had long hesitated to accept the concept of Palestinian statehood, capitulating only in June under heavy US pressure.”

Conversely, a January 22 AP report, by Dalia Nammari, while describing what amounts to an intransigent Mahmoud Abbas, failed to pejoratively characterize him as “hard-line” or “intransigent” or anything like that. The report said: “President Barack Obama’s Mideast envoy failed Friday to lure Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas back to peace talks with Israel, as Abbas stuck to his insistence that an Israeli settlement freeze come first.”

The phenomenon of the use of “judgement terms” in Middle East reporting, such as the habitual characterization of Mr. Abbas and his Fatah party as “moderate,” is the subject of a CAMERA Op-Ed in the Christian Science Monitor.

Media, Hurrying to Canonize Mahmoud Abbas, Overlook Inconvenient Facts

Palestinian Media Watch in a Dec. 29, 2009 article by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook, reported that the Palestinian murderers of Rabbi Meir Avshalom Chai (a 45-year old Israeli father of seven children) were declared to be “Holy Martyrs” by Mahmoud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority. But the American media was AWOL on this story possibly because the story tarnishes the Palestinian president’s benign image in the media as a trustworthy peacemaker.

Similarly, only the Associated Press reported on the recent decision to name a Ramallah square in honor of the female mastermind of a 1978 bus hijacking in Israel that killed 37 people. A Nexis on-line search found only one major American newspaper containing the AP report.

The AP report quoted Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, condemning the honor bestowed upon the terrorist mastermind: “This is not the way to make peace. Peace is made by educating reconciliation, by encouraging good neighborly relations and by fostering respect.”

The media’s selectivity toward Israel and Abbas is typified by the so-called national “paper of record,” the New York Times, which, although it failed to inform readers about the honors bestowed upon the Palestinian murderers of Rabbi Chai or the mastermind of the 1978 bus hijacking, did provide space for at least one relatively inconsequential event: The Israeli man who at age 50 was granted his 11th divorce (January 10, 2010 Sunday, Week in Review, Pg. 4).

Palestinian Terrorists Honored by President Abbas

    PMW-A1.jpg

The December 24, 2009 murderers of Rabbi Meir Avshalom Hai, a 45-year old Israeli father of seven children, have been declared to be “Holy Martyrs” by Mahmoud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority.

This information comes via Palestinian Media Watch in a Dec. 29 report authored by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook.
