AP Returns Golan Heights to Syria
AP's online "interactive" item entitled "Syria's civil war" contains a map (below) placing the Golan Heights, in their entirety, within Syria.
Israel gained most of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War, and annexed the territory in 1981.
As is clear from the CIA Factbook map (below), most of the Golan Heights are within Israel. (Though the CIA map does not color the Heights white, the color used for Israel, it indicates that the territory is "Israeli occupied.")
In light of the fact that the map is part of an item meant to explain Syria's civil war, the erroneous location of the Golan Heights within Syria is particularly misleading. There is, of course, no Syrian civil war in the Israeli Golan Heights.
Sept. 1 Update: AP Amends Map with Golan Heights

Who and what can you believe when AP (Assoc. Press), a news gathering service of long standing, plays so loose and in such a shoddy way with information that is so very basic and relevant to the story at hand?
I can just imagine AP covering the Crucifixion:
UNPOPULAR CARPENTER HUNG FROM TWO BY FOURS ALONG SIDE A COUPLE OF THIEVES.

Those who tell lies eventually gag on them.

This article is very strange. I understand that Israel annexed the Golan. However, it is a common expectation that if Syria made peace with Israel, that Israel would return the Golan to Syria. So what is the big deal if the map shows the Golan as still belonging to Syria. Not a big deal to me and I strongly support Israel.

AP and Peter above needs to stop with their Arab propaganda lies that the Golan isn't Israeli land.
The Golan belongs to Israel Period.
Syria controlled the Golan for only 21 years from 48 to 67, half the period it has been under Israeli rule. Almost half of the Golan had been purchased by Rothschild in the late 1800s and later robbed by the Syrian government in 1946.
All Jews were expelled from the Golan by terrorist Syria in 1946.
The Golan Heights was part of the British Mandate borders of 1917 that was supposed to go to Israel. The British gave the Golan to France in 1922 and France gave it to Syria in 1946.
The Golan was never part of Syria before 1946.
The Golan Has Been Jewish for Centuries. These rotten Arab colonialists have stolen lands from Kurds, Berbers, Copts, Babylonians, Chaldeans and they want to steal Jewish lands as well. The Golan was part of ancient and modern Israel for centuries, while it was under Syrian occupation for a mere 21 years!! The archaeology of the Golan is proof that the Golan is Jewish. I personally helped dig up a Talmudic era synagogue in Katzrin which is now has a visitor centre. The only Arab land is (Saudi) Arabia. The Arabs can go back there!!
The Golan is where the tribes of Dan and Menashe settled, and Israeli kings ranging from Saul to Herod ruled there. The Golan saw consecutive Jewish settlement for 800 years; 300 Jewish communities from the time of the Mishna and Talmudwere discovered there, along with the remnants of 27 synagogues. Later, 1,000 years of desolation followed, until the Jews returned. The Golan belongs to Israel because it is the estate of their forefathers.

Peter,
The "Common expectation..." you refer to have been proposed by U.S. Politicians and the U.N. who rarely take into account Israel's Security needs in a dangerous region.
You say you are a supporter of Israel? Come and see what Syrians are doing to themselves. Then imagine if they were in control of the hills overlooking the Sea of Galilee? Of the millions of Christian tourists coming each year in absolute safety, how many would feel safe enough with the Syrian bruts overlooking them just meters away?
The Golan Heights will always remain part of Israel due to the fact that Syria used it for nothing but a huge military complex designed to bomb Israeli targets, prior to 1967.

I think this has been adjusted since this publication.

Land for Peace does not work, quite the contrary.
See Lebanon and Gaza. The annexed part of the Golan Heights belongs to Israel and must remain so

PH -- Yes, the AP commendably amended the map shortly after we contacted editors. We will be posting an update. Thanks.
