Palestine, The Serious Game

Palestine game image.jpe

David Sarno of the Los Angeles Times reports:

Denmark-based Serious Games Interactive has built a game around one of the world's most divisive issues. In Global Conflicts: Palestine, you control a freelance journalist who roams the streets of Jerusalem armed with nothing but a pencil and a steno pad. Your editor asks you to cover Israeli Defense Forces security raids, border checkpoints, and even martyrdom; you're asked to interview families of the victims and of the bomber alike. As you speak to Arabs and Israelis around town, you carefully pluck their best quotes, the object being to write a balanced, thorough newspaper article at the day's end.

With funding from the government of Denmark and the European Union as well as private sources, Global Conflicts' $800,000 budget has enabled designers to build a dynamic and visually attractive 3-D environment. The game's open, go-wherever feel is reminiscent of much bigger commercial games, which is amusing considering that all you really ever do in this game is talk to people.

Martyrdom? Would that include the intentional blowing up of innocent civilians in pizza parlors and bat mitzvah parties? Is that Sarno's word or Serious Games'? "Martyrdom" aside, it would be interesting to see how this game works.

"Israel Defense Forces" would be the Occupation Offensive Forces that raid homes in the West Bank and Gaza...not defending or securing anything in "Israel."

"Israel Defense Forces" would be the forces that captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967 in response to severe acts of war and threats by the Arab world to destroy Israel.

It's the army that stayed in that territory because the Palestinians and Arab countries failed to accept Israel's offer, shortly after the war, to withdraw in exchange for peace. It's the army that pulled out of Palestinian population centers after Oslo, only to be pulled back in when those centers became the bases for anti-Israel terrorism.

Yep.

Absolutely. When the IDF goes into a Palestinian bomb making factory, or tries to destroy weapon smuggling tunnels, or tries to stop rockets falling on Israel civilian centers, or tries to stop the flow of weaponry destined to attack Israel soldiers and civilians, or institutes checkpoints so that suicide bombers will have a tougher time penetrating Israeli defenses...

...well then, they're acting in an offensive manner and not helping to defend Israeli security at all.

Willful ignorance, Mickelle, doesn't make reality go away.

Nor does it make a nation fighting against those who explicitly demand genocide and who reject any and all peace deals "offensive" forces.

It's like seeing a crazed hateful neo-Nazi attack a Jew with a knife in an attempt to kill him, and then declaring that if the Jew actually wins and holds the crazed killer down, that it's an act of "aggression" and that there is no knife.

Your opposition to Israel's right to self defense against the modern Nazi party is shameful. Your Orwellian doublespeak whereby the victim becomes the "offensive" power is shameful. Your willful ignorance of heroic Israeli peace efforts and the Palestinian's campaign of civilian targeted terrorism is shameful. Your game of outright fabrication whereby those stopping the murder of innocent Israelis aren't "defending or securing" anything in Israel, which you put in quotes, is shameful.

That you would put the name of the sovereign nation of Israel in quotes, as if to suggest that it is not a legitimate state is, again, a turn of Orwellian language designed to deceive not elucidate. And it, too, is shameful. You are, more likely than not, unaware that the early Zionists bought the land they lived on, and that the partition was along ethnic majority lines, that the people you're supporting were allies of the Nazis and still use their ideology, that the war in 1948 was one of "extermination" in the words of the Arab League's Secretary General, and, of course, that there already would've been an Israel and a Palestine if the Palestinians hadn't declared that not only did they want their land, they also wanted the Jewish land, and to murder the Jews who owned it to boot.

Your presentation is ignorant, counter-factual, dishonest, and dishonorable. I'd advise you to learn about the history 0f the region before you have to eat another heaping serving of crow.

You should be ashamed of yourself.
